History of Rockaway Township, NJ

Incorporated April 8, 1844 from portions of Hanover and Pequannock Townships. Mount Hope iron mining began circa 1710 — among the earliest mines in the American colonies.

Picatinny Arsenal founded June 26, 1880 as Dover Powder Depot. On July 10, 1926, a lightning-struck warehouse explosion destroyed several million pounds of explosives — 19 deaths, 187 of 200 buildings destroyed, $47 million in damage. One of the largest peacetime military disasters in U.S. history.

The Picatinny rail (MIL-STD-1913) was invented at Picatinny Arsenal in 1992 — now the universal firearm accessory mounting system used on virtually every modern military and civilian rifle worldwide.
