History of Dover, NJ
Incorporated April 1, 1869 within Randolph Township. Full independence March 5, 1896. Iron ore was 'so plentiful it could be collected off the ground' at the nearby Dickerson Mine — iron/mill works, machine shops, stove/furnace/range works, rolling mills, and drill works powered the economy.
The Morris Canal passed through Dover with a boat basin at present-day JFK Memorial Commons Park. Dover served as an inland port during the canal era.
