History of South Amboy, NJ

Founded in 1684 as New Perth. Incorporated as a city on April 11, 1908.

The T.A. Gillespie Shell Loading Plant explosion of 1918 devastated the area during WWI.

The 1950 ammunition explosion at the Healing Lighterage Company dock was another major disaster.

The first New Jersey airmail flight took place between South Amboy and Perth Amboy in 1912.

Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo was filmed at the Raritan Diner in 1984. Scenes from Coyote Ugly were also filmed in the city in 1999.
