History of Florham Park, NJ

The Florham estate: Florence Adele Vanderbilt Twombly (granddaughter of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt) and financier Hamilton McKown Twombly acquired 1,200 acres in 1887. The 100-room Georgian Revival mansion was designed by McKim, Mead and White (1894-1897), inspired by the Christopher Wren wing of Hampton Court Palace. Grounds landscaped by Frederick Law Olmsted. 125 staff, 10 greenhouses, carriage house with 40 horses and 6 maroon Rolls-Royces (House of Vanderbilt livery color).

Incorporated March 20, 1899. Named Florham — a combination of Florence and Hamilton Twombly. The Wards and Twomblys persuaded the NJ Legislature to create the borough from Chatham Township.

The Brooklake estate: Dr. Leslie Dodd Ward (co-founder and first VP of Prudential Insurance) built a 44-room stone mansion in 1902 with landscaped gardens, private golf course, and boathouse. His art collection is now housed at the Frick Collection in NYC. The estate became Brooklake Country Club in 1985.

Fairleigh Dickinson University purchased 187 acres of the Florham estate in 1958. The campus opened that fall. The 9th-largest house in the US became a university.

The NY Jets Atlantic Health Training Center opened in 2008 — $75M, 217,561 sq ft designed by Skidmore Owings and Merrill. First time the Jets operated entirely under one roof.

BASF North America HQ completed 2012 — largest LEED Platinum office building in NJ, one of only 5 in North America with dual Platinum certifications. 85% reduction in outdoor water use, 40% reduction in potable water demand.
