History of Chester, NJ
Oldest settlers arrived 1640 at Black River — established at intersection of two Lenape Indian trails. Named after Cheshire, England. Chester Township incorporated January 29, 1779. Borough separated April 3, 1930 to establish a public water system.
Chester was an Underground Railroad stop for escaped and freed slaves. The Publick House (est. 1810, originally the Brick Hotel) has barred cellar windows testifying to its use during the slavery era.
Iron ore discovered 1875 behind a house on Main Street — 35 mines opened over the next 15 years, 6 on Main Street alone. Chester Furnace built 1878 on Furnace Road for pig iron; closed 1888 when cheaper iron was found in Minnesota.
The Lawrence Line dividing East and West Jersey went directly through Chester. Bell Laboratories built a research facility here in the late 1920s. First suburban housing development: 1962 on Oakdale Road.
